LIKE A VEIN OF COPPER

Like a vein of copper
In the pile of tee shirts
Forgotten
At the back of the dark closet

It was yours
A treasure in the dark evenings of January

Still wrinkled where clothes pins
Held it to the line

Sun dried
And smelling like you
And summer
And things lost
For awhile

THOUGH I NEVER SAW IT

Though I never saw it
I remember the ceramic blue bird

Fragile and chipped
Wounded

Yet able to weather storms and sun and cold
Its crystalline strength
Softened by the sky blue glaze
The gray wear of years
And the love
It would some day hold
