WALTZING WITH SWEET WILLIAM

The tender instep
the broken reed
she waltzes with him
to the music of river-veins
he leads her to a cascade of light
she wipes a tear
from a wildflower's glistening eye
the lies of men and women
overflow the creek bed
ask for sweet forgiveness
moisten the soft folds of night.

PART OF THE LANDSCAPE

She casts no shadow
pressed full body against the tree
her longing shaped like a leaf
that has evolved beyond
the point of recognition.

Her muted dreams feather
falling from tree to ground
a small grey bird motionless
afraid of her own desires
hides between stones.
