SELF
WORTH
Normally a
kind woman,
her face now twisted red
with vein-popping rage, she sent
the rule-breaking boy to the corner.
And
followed him there
giving her lengthy worst
to shame him. And he took it,
head down till she was done.
But when
she turned her back
and walked away, he looked
up as if seeing a heaven
denied the rest of us
and
silently mouthed one word
again and again, soothing
and blessing the angered air:
"Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!"
