WINTER HAIKU
windchimes
in winter –
distant stars
*
first snow –
trees holding
silence
*
deep winter –
the wind swinging
on the playground swings
RIVER IN SNOW
Water
flowing through
water:
the fast-moving dark
and on either side,
stillness in white.
Water flowing
through water.
Rapids talking
back to themselves,
bracketed by silence.
Oh to be held so close
by something that fell
and stayed.
Water flowing through water –
quick cursive
across the blank page –
the river writing stories
of arrival, the sunlit snow
letting go
a book of sky
both yielding
to a larger knowing,
in time disappearing
into what they are.
Water flowing through
water.
One with the voice of continuing,
and the other, lingering.
Oh to be the one who was
whispered to slowly
even as I was leaving –
Jennifer Burd, Ypsilanti, Michigan
