THE SENTINEL
    for Duane Locke

Egret appears
to be a swatch
of wave and foam

brushed from
wind where
he stands upright

birds hover like drift wood

he shifts from leg
to leg upon
a rain blue drum

minnows sing Rainbows
Under Boards
strumming

his feet
humming
through cracks

from the keg
of words
sloshing inside

waiting
for the fisherman’s
return

birds hover like drift wood

to pry open
its top
releasing

those wriggling
stars
longing

for sky
and night
to appear

as they slide
into dark
mouths

of bass
the full moon
echoes

birds hover like drift wood

the Egret
springs
with green—

stemmed legs
yellow
pronged feet

and bright
feathers
dive

into petals
of foam
coasting
