L’Après Midi
I always wanted to be that student
in the French-language instruction video
(VHS then), an American in Paris,
open to whatever the day might bring.
He seats himself at the small table
outside the bistro at noon,
and after some discussion with the waiter
that teaches us jambon, du pain, and du vin,
receives such lightness for the day –
a small plate with a thin slice of ham,
an end of unbuttered bread,
a half-glass of red wine,
and one small cloud drifting overhead.
Turn
The overcast is brightening
our garden zinnias
among which a bumblebee
gathers the last of summer,
colors trained on sky.
The green hearts of the old redbud
deepen in self-made shade,
all those ellipses on the pods
stretching dusk into the last light
of fireflies. Some of the flower petals
have already been plucked
by goldfinches, while others turn
and dry, August’s dial
clicking slowly southward.
To Late Summer
In these last days of you
how do we hold
the sound of crickets
slipping through our fingers
the moment a ripeness
falls in the night and
thunder shower
leaving pieces of you
strewn about and left
ungathered until
we begin to call you
autumn
