IROKO AT SUNSET

Totem tree of the jungle,
Landmark daring the wind's uprooting mission.
Nothing so close to you threatens your stay,
Towering everpresence!
At your feet secrets die,
Before your gigantic shadow
Priests betray their calling.
Let the bushes echo your might now,
The rain shall bless your shoulders.

THE LONG LOOK TO SEE WHERE CHOICE IS BORN

You can go as far as Kano,
Or make a U-Turn and head straight for Kaduna,

Where smoky properties and the burnt
Remains of the dead litter streets...

While questions accost
A violent generation

Whose hearts replicating
The IRA in Belfast and al-Qaida,

Reveal why the homeland's *"soil
Is bad for certain kinds of flowers."

Dike Okoro, Evanston, Illinois; Port Harcourt, Nigeria

*Toni Morrison
