NEW YEAR'S DAY
The cover page is lifted,
folded back, and days
hang on the wall, unlived.
We open curtains, look out
with warm, shining faces
at snow just starting to fall,
our hands absently breaking
apart soft sections of orange
that ripened on its way here.
The numbers gaze steadily
from the squares--high,
dark windows, empty house,
waiting for someone to come.

Laszlo Slomovits, Ann Arbor
