Meditation 6

After a midday cloudburst
    one shallow puddle
reflects
curvy whiskers and
         ticklish ear tufts
of a lithe bobcat

                     jade eyes
       mirror
   bobbing quail
peck a name
              in sand

Meditation 7

A chromatic sea
gasps
roars & groans
spews her swollen
opaque belly
on shore

                   as darkness
 rubs buoyant
     luminescent foam sleeves
on sand

Meditation 8

The slivered moon
illuminates
a bobcat’s intricate

facial stripes

summons
the spirit keeper home
among

    shrill cicadas

elusive owls &
    swarming bats

Arizona-Mexico Border

Tensions
in concertina barbed wire
detonate ground and gravel
beneath boots

Hands
torn like sheets of crepe paper
dried by lavender wind
scratch skin
morning and night

Faces
hidden from the moon and the moon’s shadow
stretch across vast fields abandoned by all hint of water

Sweat alone recognizes itself
on long overdue
bonds scraped together
by a thirst for rest
silence
peace
