Leland Cemetery,
Canton Township, Michigan
The iron latch creaks as I lift it,
swing the gate open, then shut the world
behind me. Four-story-high branches
of maple and beech sway above.
Birds are quiet under the heaviness
of a summer afternoon.
I know the way. Footstep
by footstep, toward
the all but unreadable
markers of my great-to-the fourth
grandparents, I walk slowly
toward my life.
Sometimes in winter
having arrived home
late at night
instead of coming into
the warmth
I stand looking up
at the clear sky jingling
all that change in its pocket
into which I have slipped
my hand taking nothing
Jennifer Burd,
Ypsilanti, Michigan
