EARLY MORNING ON THE RIVER TRAIL

Waking before the sun
Walking on the north trail
Along the Miami River
I make my way south toward
My brother’s campsite.
He has been out three days
Hunting for deer and trout,
Two days more before he returns,
So I will have two suns
To hunt and camp with him.
Running Two Shoes is wise,
Almost as our father,
And I learn from him
As I learn from our tribal elders.
Father says I have a few more years
Of learning before I too
Will go out on my own
By time passes like
The eagle in flight.
I wait for my day in sunlight.
