UP THE TRAIL
Grass lies beige,
geese gather gray.
I hike the trail, glad for my fur coat
to blend in…
Why the sense of outsider
when I am not?
I follow switchbacks up the mountain
to a break in the cliffs. On the far side
is a meadow known for magic herbs
that bestow wisdom, longevity.
I need both! The trail is slippery, a maze!
Rocks tumble down, graze me—
The geese fly off.
A timber wolf!
She snatches my rations, sprints up
the trail, looks back as if
daring me to follow.
More wolves appear—
Two drag me through the gap
to a cave…for their dinner?
Nightfall. They disappear…
