In the shallows there’s a well-staged melodrama as bufflehead ducks play at irritating an egret. With raised crests, they paddle close to his legs. Until, in a dramatic flurry of white, the egret skips inelegantly along the shore, followed by his little tormentors.
Nearby, a sapsucker stops his staccato tattooing, aware that there’s an ellipsis in this story. . .
Then someone cues the wind. It raises the hair on my arms, casts its chill breath across the water, and flicks the tail feathers of the buffleheads who prepare for another attack.
The sapsucker’s lost interest and resumes his muffled tapping. Awaiting the next act, I raise my own white crest and refuse to exit left.
