Coyotes howl
in a distant canyon
at daylight
Winter winds scribble symbols
with bleached talons
on silver olive trees
Winter demands patience
and whispers with a blue tongue in palm fronds
Rustles lizard shadows
across flaxen weeds
herding glimmers of darkness
Winter diverts
white-crowned sparrows
from their undulating flight
to hunkering in chaotic bushes
for cover
