Needing the Birds
(After Liesel Mueller)
Those small mouths tell all the world.
Hearts of feather, songs on the wing.
If only all the rest of us sung
our claim on things, stayed alert,
used the breeze to foster movement.
The unsung territories – the songs
in our hearts – create kingdoms
of change if we will listenII
and remember our inborn grammar,
the songs of our very being.
The day ticks on, feather by feather.
The sun practices it scales, crescendo,
decrescendo. All I need is one window –
one window to be able to see
all of us out there flying.
Crescent Moon in Autumn
That little boat –
and the star below it
a small hook let down
into a bright blue sea.
Jennifer Burd, Ypsilanti, Michigan
