I REMEMBER

I remember
the first time

I looked
in the mirror

and saw God
staring back at me

I smiled and
said hello

TALKING TO AN OLD MAN IN A WAITING ROOM AT DISCOUNT TIRE THIS MORNING

I’m not doing bad
For an old geezer

Life now
Is just a matter of pain

And what doctor
You go to to cure it

Retirement isn’t all
It’s cut out to be

I tell you kid
Never get old

I’m not saying
It’s all bad

I had cancer
And I think it’s gone away

But I’m not as strong
As I was---my body

I used to be able
To work on my cars

But now I can’t
Even lift a tire

I tell you kid
Stay young forever
