PASSING QUIETLY THROUGH
Passing quietly through the camp
I listen to crows caw-cawing answering
the lake geese honk-honking
as they raise the morning light,
the mist slowly lifting over the water
like winter steam from a hot spring
out alongside the trail.
Walking the back country
passing fields of wild carrots
in rambling clumps posed
beneath the sun-brightened shine
of maple and oak leaves
under the pale blue sky.
Just to be in this place is to begin to touch
what I often pass without even turning.
Yes, there is a joy in this occasion,
Some real feeling taking place here,
rather like, when I was walking
the fields with my father, learning from him.
